JAMB, Varsities Differ on New Admission Guidelines.

Oleh Unknown - July 13, 2016
University administrators have faulted the recently introduced admission guidelines by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, which prohibits any further screening by institutions. They maintained that inadequate pre-admission screening will further erode the quality of graduates from Nigerian Universities. Uchechukwu Nnaike and Funmi Ogundare report Following the recent scrapping of the post-UTME screening, Nigerians were last week jolted by reports of the introduction of a new point system option for this year’s admission into Nigerian universities by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), but the board swiftly refuted the claims, saying that it was an illustration made by the Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde. The examination body has now introduced new admission guidelines. The Head of Media and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin said in a statement that the federal government approved the re-enforcement of admission guideline by law and that all tertiary institutions have consequently been directed to adhere to the guidelines.

“Admission would be based on three pillars: merit, catchment and educationally disadvantaged states.” Benjamin said the 2016 admission would not require the conduct of another test either written or oral, as candidates would only present their Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE)/Advanced Level results for verification and clearing purposes, adding that WAEC, NECO and NBTE results or their equivalent are acceptable as matriculation requirements.

To parents and students, the directive is a welcome development, as students will not be burdened with another round of test before securing admission, while parents will no longer be required to pay for post-UTME screening. However, university administrator think it will take the country back to the era of malpractice, where students secured admission with scored they didn’t own. Explaining the reason behind the introduction of post-UME screening in 2004, the former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Peter Okebukola, said it was introduced when it was discovered that undergraduates used to act as mercenaries for UME candidates, who then parade high scores they did not work for. He said a vice-chancellor had approached him in 2002 and complained that a large percentage of his students impersonated UME candidates that year. When consulted, he said other vice-chancellors also confirmed it. That he said underscored the need to introduce another layer of screening, not multiple choice test that would assess candidates’ spoken and written English.

Okebukola said the vice-chancellors and NUC went to the then president and the national assembly and it was agreed that the post-UME screening should consist of essay to test candidates’ written English, interview to test their oral English and to see how they are, if they are good enough to be admitted into the institution. “It was also agreed then that no university should charge more than N1,000. We started it in 2004 and I was bold enough to tell President Obasanjo that by 2009, we started getting the dream graduates from our universities.

In 2004, we discovered that about 25 per cent of those with high scores in UME did not show up for the post-UME screening because they used mercenaries, they didn’t earned the results.” He regretted that when the set of vice-chancellors that worked with him left, the new ones that came changed things; “they started doing the multiple choice questions again, but that was not the agreement, the agreement was that let JAMB do that. They were not caring at all about essay type, they only wanted to collect money quickly and go so all the things we wanted to tackle; the oral and written English was no more. They were charging as much as they wanted.” Okebukola, who is the current Chairman, Governing Council of Crawford University, Ogun State, said when the news came that universities should stop post-UTME, he was happy because he felt it would be temporary, “so that we can get it right again, make new ground rules and then move on from there.

“Until we are able to assess how candidates speak English, assess their logical expressions and assess their persons, we will be taking one step forward and several steps backwards.” The Vice-Chancellor of Edwin Clark University, Prof. Timothy Olagbemiro, said oral interview of any sort would be a useful tool in assessing students for university admission, adding that if JAMB had adopted the point system, it would have been superfluous and discriminatory in status between those who achieve their five credits at one sitting and those who do it in two sittings. “The point system would have been jacketory, not allowing universities to make other viable options such as oral or simple English test, syntax or written statements by applicants, to ensure they really understand and can write the English Language.” He added that academic freedom is totally destroyed when JAMB hands down to the entire university system how they should admit their students. “It is just wrong in all ramifications.” The Vice-Chancellor of Fountain University, Oshogbo, Osun State, Prof. Raji Bashir, said no examination can truly capture the inherent potential of any student; hence factoring previous examinations like WAEC is good. He said many universities will still conduct their own post-UTME screening in whatever name they may give it.

“Some do it for Internally Generated Revenue while many private universities do it to screen out possible miscreants before admission.” He appealed to JAMB, ministry of education and NUC to allow university senates to decide modalities for admission into each institution, saying that over-regulation would only limit innovation. The Vice-Chancellor of Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, Prof. Dayo Alao, said there is need for JAMB to set an exam which will be used to evaluate the level of every candidate for every university, while expressing concern that the board has over the years been compromised. “Is it the corruption that President Mohammadu Buhari is fighting? It has extended to the academics where they use fraudulent results to get admission. More recently, we discovered that people always have examination questions in advance. Parents too connive, aid and abet, most people even spend a lot of money to get question papers for their children. Sadly some have become contractors to helping people write exams, so at the end of the day, you are not getting a true evaluation of the performance of the students. “

Because of that lacuna and the gap that has been created, then they now decided to do post-UTME so that when you bring a very brilliant result from JAMB, there is a tendency that there may not be a continuity of that result when you write post-UTME. Some people will get 60 or 70 per cent, while some are getting 20 and other horrible marks, then you quickly discover that something has gone wrong.” He said there should be a regulated exam JAMB will set with the standard of various universities, which is not too far away from what the board will give as an exam, adding that it is the reason the council of pro-chancellors and vice-chancellors decided that there should be sanity in the system. “An average student is always an average student, a student who has performed creditably in UTME will also perform creditably in post-UTME, but ironically, that is not the case. If you can perform brilliantly in your school certificate exams, and perform brilliantly in JAMB, there is nothing that will stop you from not performing brilliantly in the post-UTME.” Alao said there was a debate as to whether or not to do away with post-UTME.

“It was so serious that JAMB and the ministry of education came into it to see what they could do, but at the end of the day, by popular vote, it was agreed that they should scrap post-UTME. “There was a protest that people who cannot meet up with the university standard not should be brought into the university because it is going to erode the level of academics, but at the end of the day, they agreed on a mid-point which is that interview could be conducted rather than charging between N2,500 and N5,000 depending on the university.” The vice-chancellor expressed delight about tertiary institutions conducting their own tests, saying, “if our children will go to school, we need to be very sure of their background. It is not necessarily someone spends six years in the university where he is supposed to spend only four years doing a course and some have gone to the extent of spending seven years, then something must be wrong.

” Alao expressed concern that people who are not interested in sitting for UTME are studying in countries like Ghana, Republic of Benin and Gabon. “That is why you see a lot of our student populating West African coast, because they will be free from JAMB. But that is not the best place to evaluate the standard of the students. I think the agreement is to meet it at the midpoint, the first leg towards sanitising education in this country is the best, instead of totally scrapping it.” He said universities have been given the opportunity to now screen their candidates looking for merits, character, mode of behavior, adding that there have been instances where students just jump from one university to another to commit crime which will limit the institution with people of horrible character.

The VC stressed the need for candidates to be properly screened academically, morally and spiritually tested so that when they get a degree, they are not just getting a degree, but would have satisfied the academic aspect of it. “Education should be total; it should be about the mind, physical, intellect not just book. People who are not morally okay hold degrees today and moral is part of education which could be gotten through the fear of God. When the fear of God is lacking in school, what are you coming out with? No matter the educational attainment, when there is no God in it, everything is not useful; the holder is not useful to the family and the society.”

Networking Basics: What You Need To Know

Oleh Unknown - July 13, 2016

When looking at networking basics, understanding the way a network operates is the first step to understanding routing and switching. The network operates by connecting computers and peripherals using two pieces of equipment; switches and routers. Switches and routers, essential networking basics, enable the devices that are connected to your network to communicate with each other, as well as with other networks. Though they look quite similar, routers and switches perform very different functions in a network. Networking Basics: Switches Switches are used to connect multiple devices on the same network within a building or campus. For example, a switch can connect your computers, printers and servers, creating a network of shared resources.

The switch, one aspect of your networking basics, would serve as a controller, allowing the various devices to share information and talk to each other. Through information sharing and resource allocation, switches save you money and increase productivity. There are two basic types of switches to choose from as part of your networking basics: managed and unmanaged. An unmanaged switch works out of the box and does not allow you to make changes.

Home-networking equipment typically offers unmanaged switches. A managed switch allows you access to program it. This provides greater flexibility to your networking basics because the switch can be monitored and adjusted locally or remotely to give you control over network traffic, and who has access to your network. Networking Basics: Routers Routers, the second valuable component of your networking basics, are used to tie multiple networks together. For example, you would use a router to connect your networked computers to the Internet and thereby share an Internet connection among many users. The router will act as a dispatcher, choosing the best route for your information to travel so that you receive it quickly. Routers analyze the data being sent over a network, change how it is packaged, and send it to another network, or over a different type of network.

They connect your business to the outside world, protect your information from security threats, and can even decide which computers get priority over others. Depending on your business and your networking plans, you can choose from routers that include different capabilities.

These can include networking basics such as: Firewall: Specialized software that examines incoming data and protects your business network against attacks Virtual Private Network (VPN): A way to allow remote employees to safely access your network remotely IP Phone network : Combine your company's computer and telephone network, using voice and conferencing technology, to simplify and unify your communications

How To Start a Blog – Beginner’s Guide for 2016

Oleh bcoded - July 13, 2016

So, you want to start a blog huh? Great idea!
But…how the heck do you get started? There’s so much info out there on the web, and everyone’s telling you to do different things. Who do you listen to? Where’s the starting point?
Damnit, maybe you should just forget it – it’s too confusing!
Well, hold up. I used to be a blogging newbie too. I had the same problems. I started my blog ( codedforum.com )  in 2016, and I knew less than nothing about blogging.

In fact it was only the week before I’d learnt what a blog was.
Now I know a ton about them, and my blog’s doing pretty well – I receive more than 2,500 unique visitors per month which makes me consider myself someone you could listen to and learn from when it comes to building your own blog. I’m not some sort of Guru , but I certainly do know the basics.
I promise it’ll be simple , relatively
easy, and definitely easy to understand (no stupid jargon). Sound good?
Awesome, let’s move on.

Why you should create a blog and join the blogging community
So below, I’m going to outline exactly what you need to do to get started and set up your own personal blog . Before we dive in though, I really want to talk about WHY you should build a blog.
Note : If you already have a solid idea of the whys, then skip this and go right ahead with the guide.

1. Blogging has quickly become one of the most popular ways of communicating and spreading information and news. There are literally millions of blogs online (don’t worry, you can make yours stand out and get noticed!).

2. It’s a great way to express yourself and also a fantastic way to share information with others.

3. You become a better person and a better writer.

4. The best reason? You can make money doing it!
I bet you already knew all of that, but it’s nice to be reminded.
One very last thing before we get started:

Creating your own blog can take a little while, probably up to 30 minutes. So grab yourself a coffee or juice (whatever you fancy) and let’s get stuck in. If you need any help during the set-up process, get in touch with me here and I’ll help as best I can and answer any questions you might have).

Disclosure: This guide to starting your own blog contains some affiliate links. If you purchase a service through one of these links I may earn a small commission, this is at no extra cost to you.
The Steps Covered In This Blogging Guide
There’s five main steps you need to go through in order to set up a blog. If you follow this guide and the five steps, you’ll have your own blog set up in 30 minutes or less. It’s nowhere near as difficult as setting up a website from scratch (there’s very little technical ability needed here). In fact, there’s no coding required by you. Good news, huh?

The 5 Simple Steps to Starting a Blog:
1. Choose your preferred blog platform
2. Choose web hosting for your blog
3. Setting up a blog on your own domain
4. Designing your blog (the fun bit!)
5. Useful resources for blogging

So, we made it. Phew. Better late than never! So, without further ado, let’s jump into

Step 1 – Choose your preferred blogging platform
Choosing where you want to build blog is pretty much the first thing you have to do. I’m going to take a leap and assume you’ve heard of WordPress, and this is the platform I advocate. It’s massive.

It’s by far one of the biggest blogging platforms in the world, with countless plugins and add-ons and almost infinite ways to design and layout your blog.
There are more than 82 million active users of WordPress = a lot, basically.

There are other alternatives however, and they are listed below:

Blogger – Definitely the next best thing to WordPress.

Tumblr – Half social network, half blog. Interesting, and very simple to use.
Even though WordPress is bigger (and probably better) than those two, here are my reasons why you should still

go with WordPress :
1. Super easy set-up and is free to use

2. Tons of free themes and layouts (I’m not kidding, there’s gazillions).

3. There’s a massive support forum in case you get stuck (you won’t, but it’s nice to have it there if you need it).

4. Your blog will be insanely fast and it’ll also look Functionality and form – perfect!

5. People can interact with you easily. Your content can be shared, commented on, and so on.

Here’s an article about different blogging platforms (including WordPress), give it a read:
How to Choose a Blogging Platform – (updated 2016)

Now , Step 2 (see, we’re moving fast now!)

Step 2 – Self-hosting or a free alternative?
Whoa, slow down there! This is the biggest decision you’ll have to make before we go any further. You need to decide whether to pay for your blog or grab a free one.
WordPress, Tumblr and Blogger all offer free blogs for anyone. Awesome, right? It’s perfect for those of us who aren’t super serious about blogging. But it does have downsides :

1) You won’t be able to get your OWN domain name
On a free blog, your blog’s web address (your URL) will be butt-ugly. Like, really ugly. In short, create a free blog with any other the above free blog services and it’ll look like this:

yourblog.wordpress.com
yourblog.blogspot.com
yourblog.tumblr.com
I know, ugly right?

2) Limits and more limits
There are some limits to free blogs. You can’t fully monetize it, and you don’t have the possibility to upload all those videos and images you want to show everyone – it’s all limited. Worse still, you won’t even have access to the free themes offered by WordPress.

3) You DON’T OWN your blog
It might sound silly at first, but you don’t actually own your blog. It’s hosted on someone else’s web property and they can delete it if they want so. They have done so in the past, and keep doing it in the future. Which means all your hard work on your blog, all those countless hours of writing blog posts might be vanished within seconds. Sad…

On the other hand, with a self-hosted blog on your own domain name – you are the REAL owner of your blog. You’ll be able to name your blog whatever you want, for example “YourName.com” or “YourAwesomeBlog.com. You can end it with .com, .co.uk, .net, .org, or virtually any other web suffix. Add to that unlimited bandwidth for videos, images and content plus the free themes and you have a winning combo.
So how much is hosting and a domain name? Not as much as you’re thinking, fortunately. It usually works out to about $5 to $10 per month, depending on your hosting provider which is less than a couple of coffees.

If you still have questions, here’s some further information for you to look at:
Should I Choose a Hosted or Non-hosted Blogging Platform?
Step 3 – Start a blog on your own domain (if you chose self-hosting and a custom domain)
I’m going to push ahead based on the premise you’ve chosen WordPress, and if you haven’t, you should.
Seriously, it’s the best.

If you’re still a little confused by what a self-hosted blog is, allow me to explain and how you can go about setting one up for yourself.
You’ll need to come up with a domain name you like and also choose a hosting company that can host your blog.

Domain: The domain is basically the URL of your website. Examples: google.com (Google.com is the domain), Facebook.com (Facebook.com is the domain). See? Simple!
Hosting: Hosting is basically the company that puts your website up on the internet so everyone else can see it. Everything will be saved on there. Think of it as a computer hard-drive on the internet where your blog will be saved.

Personally, I use iPage (for my blog domain and hosting), and I’ve got nothing but good things to say about it. It’s probably one of the cheapest (less than $2.50 per month) hosting providers out there. A domain name will cost around $10-15 a year, but with iPage they throw that in for free :). Big smiles for that! They’re the providers I use for all of my blogs, including the one you’re reading right now.
If for any reason you don’t want to go with iPage, feel free to choose your own hosting company. Most, if not all of them, should have a “ one-click” WordPress install solution on their admin panel.

That button will automatically install WordPress on your blog. Did I say it was simple or what?
All you need to do is sign up with iPage (or your chosen provider), choose your hosting plan and a domain name and look for the one-click WordPress install button on the admin panel.
WordPress essentials aren’t often needed, but I’d recommend whois privacy (that will keep all your personal details private) and definitely automated backups (this’ll save your website just in case anything fails or disappears, so you won’t lose any or very little of your blog).

I have a more in-depth tutorial on
building a blog with iPage here .

Start a Blog with iPage today and get an exclusive discount plus a free domain name
Once WordPress is installed on your website, all you have to do to start blogging is go to your WP-Admin page usually www.yourblognamehere.com/wp-admin and start writing by adding a new post.

At the start, the layout looks confusing, but it gets very understandable quickly. Don’t worry!

Step 4 – Designing your WordPress blog
Now, the fun bit.

Let’s make your blog look exactly how you want it to. To choose a new theme, you can either head to Appearance > Themes and install a free WordPress theme or you can head to a premium theme website like

ThemeForest.net and buy a theme for around $40.
I usually choose something that looks professional and pretty easy to customise. WordPress also has this awesome feature that allows you to change themes with just a few clicks. So if you start getting tired of your current blog template, you can just switch to another one without losing any precious content or images.
Remember, your blog’s design should reflect both you and your personality, but also what the blog is about. There’s no point having a football-orientated theme if your blog is about tennis, understand?

On top of that, it should be easy to navigate if you want people to stick around. If it’s tricky and difficult to move around it, people won’t stay. Design is a subjective art; meaning everyone likes different things.
But no one likes ugly websites, and they especially hate websites that need a university degree to navigate. Make it easy for them.
For more reading, I’ve put together 3 blog posts about designing your blog. Feel free to check them through.

Is there any software I can use to make my own graphics, button, and banner?
Last step! Woo!

Step 5 – Useful Resources For Beginner Bloggers
Bloggers come to blogging arena with varying degrees of online and social media experience, but we’ve all made more than a few newbie mistakes – there’s always room for more learning and improvement, whether you’re a beginner or you’ve been blogging for years.

These articles may help you avoid some of the growing pains when it comes to your first blog – enjoy!:

Oleh Stardom - July 13, 2016
Are you surprised to see a smartphone from Pepsi (popularly known for beverages)? You don't have to be because this device is not even the first ever android phone from the Mineral producing company as they launched Pepsi P1 Android phone last year October.

One of the interesting aspects of their phones i like so much is good specs. They don't joke with RAM and Camera. Even the former Pepsi P1 handset came with 2GB RAM as of last year, the same size with this one. The two device uses a 3000mAh battery capacity

With its 13MP camera lens, you are assured of taking cool pictures with the device. Although the phone comes with Android 5.1 lollipop which can be considered as going backwards when android marshmallow and Android N Nougat are trending now but considering the price of the Pepsi P1S 4G which is just $99, it is cool.

Although the device might not be solely produced by Pepsi so it can be through some sort of endorsement deal.
